Study Reveals That Life Plan Community Residents Are More Physically Active

Posted by Gayle Young on Apr 25, 2019 1:16:00 PM

Residents of Life Plan Communities participate in physical activity more frequently than older adults living in the community at large. Not surprisingly, Life Plan Community residents also report being in better overall health than other seniors.

Those findings come from the Age Well Study, a five-year research project currently underway by the Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging and Northwestern University. In January, researchers released findings from the first of 5 annual surveys collected from more than 5,100 residents of 80 Life Plan Communities around the country.

In general, Life Plan Community residents self-rate their health as “good” to “very good.” They also report having fewer than two chronic, physician-diagnosed health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes—significantly fewer than older adults in general.

Life Plan Community residents exercise vigorously one to three times a month, and they engage in moderate-to-mild physical activity one or more times each week. The study's authors point out that residents living in Life Plan Communities that offer fitness training tend to engage in moderate physical activity more frequently.

Indeed, having convenient access to fitness centers and wellness services helps contribute to residents’ physical wellness. Ninety-nine percent of Life Plan Communities participating in the Age Well Study have a fitness center and 85 percent have a swimming pool. What's more, Life Plan Communities typically offer residents onsite wellness education and health screenings.

"The 10,000 square foot clubhouse at Fieldstone Villas—which is part of our Sunset Village Life Plan Community— includes a swimming pool and a workout room," says Gayle Young, Executive Director of Sales and Marketing for Sunset Communities. "We encourage Fieldstone residents to use the exercise equipment on their own and to join in some of the organized workout activities we offer."

Formerly known as Continuing Care Communities, Life Plan Communities offer residents the ability to enjoy active, independent lifestyles with priority access to assisted-living or nursing care should their health or abilities eventually decline.
